When to Go?
Northbound my choice would be to leave Cape Town in early April. The reasoning is that it’s a great time to travel in Southern Africa, after the rains the grass is green, the young game has been born and generally the weather is not too hot. The following few months are stable with settled conditions in the Southern Hemispheres dry cool winter. Ideal for travel across the region. As the land dries out the game becomes more concentrated around the water holes and makes the wildlife sightings increasingly dramatic.
However problem with African trans-continental journeys is that you will at some point always hit weather conditions that are not ideal. The trick is to optimise the timing to miss the worst of the rains and avoid the extreme heat of the deserts.
